The first FZR1000 launched Yamaha's litre-class sports bike, with a 35 degree forward-inclined, five-valve 989 cc four derived from the FZ750 and the YZF endurance racer, in an aluminium Deltabox frame taken from a GP-racer design. It was voted machine of the year by readers in 1987 and was valued for pairing strong power with road-going comfort.
